Experience

I started tutoring friends and classmates when I was in high school (2001-2005) and continued doing so at UCO (2005-2009). I stopped tutoring after graduating because I was working and didn't have the time. Then, in 2011, an acquaintance (31 years old) told me he was going back to school for his Associates and needed help with English Comp I and II, as well as with essays for other classes and terms papers. So, I agreed to tutor him and he did very well! I enjoyed tutoring him and so started advertising a little. In late April 2013, I began to seriously advertise and have since tutored many students in: grade school, middle school, high school and college, as well as people trying to obtain their GED. Every student I have helped has seen a very positive impact on their grades. While in 10th grade, I took the PLAN test and scored in the 90th percentile range for English and Reading. In 2002, I received the Who's Who Among American High School Students Award. In 2003, I took the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test and scored 10 (out of 12) for Writing and 781 for the English part of the test. Those results put me in the Advanced Range. In 2004, I was selected to attend the Congressional Student Leadership Conference. Senior Year, 2005, I tested in the 90th percentile (again) for English and Reading on my ACT. Since 3rd grade, when I did my first research paper (on parrots), and all the way through College, I never received less than an 'A' on any writing assignment (essays, term papers, short stories, poems, etc.) I want to be a tutor because I have been tutoring for over 10 years and I love doing it. I love reading and writing and it comes as naturally to me as breathing but I understand that is not the case for most people. I love teaching people of all ages to read and write well. It doesn't even feel like work to me! I want to be a tutor because I believe that there is a large demand for tutors like me, who specialize in Language Arts: English, Reading and Comprehension, Composition, Grammar, etc. I believe there is an over-abundance of math, science, SAT tutors, etc and others who tutor as many different subjects as they can. Often, they work with more than one student at a time and so the student doesn't receive the specific help he/she needs. I believe many students need one-on-one help because they will feel no pressure to be at the same level as the kids around them and therefore will be more likely to ask questions and get the help they truly need. I especially enjoy helping the students who need it most; the ones who are grade levels behind or who have learning disabilities such as Dyslexia and/or ADD or the ones for whom English is their second language. I am patient, kind, humorous (when possible) and genuinely care not only that my students succeed but that they learn that reading and writing don't have to be scary. In college I did not take English Composition I or II because I CLEP tested out of it. I took Creative Writing, Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, Standard Print Article Writing, an Editing class and any other writing classes I possibly could. I was invited to spend the Spring 2009 semester in Washington DC in the Semester in Washington Journalism Program. I attended, interned full time at a news wire service (similar to the Associated Press, but focused on Economics), attended George Washington University for that semester and finished the program with a 3.76 GPA. I am proficient in the following formats: Chicago, AP, APA, and MLA.
